Chapter 23
Victoria was so mad she swore she saw red for the first ten minutes as Robert and Finn had tried to calm her down and explain everything they’d kept from her. She’d been furious the entire time they spoke, constantly yelling out at them and cursing them for thinking that it was the right thing to do to hide stuff from her—especially stuff like this! Finn, socially awkward to begin with, had actually seemed to slink down into his chair, further and further as she berated them, his face glowing crimson with embarrassment. Robert had remained confident, and constantly tried to settle her and tell her that their intentions had been good.
“You thought you had good intentions by not telling me that somebody shot an arrow into our door last night? That Finn’s hearing voices? That you didn’t just find Jeremiah Thate dead, but murdered?” She had screamed back at him, feeling the red hot rage fill her cheeks. “And then, instead of filling me in, you and Finn decide that the two of you are just going to worry about this and work it all out on your own, not even bother to see what I have to think about any of it? Why? One of you answer me that. Why?”
She knew Finn wouldn’t say a word; he wouldn’t even look at her. Instead, he picked at one of the tattered cuffs on his sweatshirt. “Well, Robert? Why?”
He didn’t hesitate. “Victoria, we didn’t want to upset you. We weren’t sure exactly what was happening, and until we did, we didn’t want to worry you about it.”
His stupidity floored her. “You didn’t want to upset me? Tell me, Robert, do I look upset now?”
He looked her in the eye for a moment, and then slowly nodded.
“Well how about that! A lot of fucking good your plan did! Because guess what, I’m upset now!” She spun around on her heels and headed toward the bedroom, halfway there stopping and saying over her shoulder, “I’m finished with my chapter, so why don’t you do something right today and write yours, pretty boy!” The last part was a cheap shot, but she didn’t care. She slammed the bedroom door behind her and collapsed on her bed.
That’s when the tears came. She’d held them in while having her rant against the boys, not wanting to appear weak. But now she couldn’t hold back. She was so infuriated it was all she could do to express her emotion. It wasn’t the things Robert said that had upset her the most—although, it was all definitely unsettling news and had severely creeped her out—it was the feeling of betrayal. She thought that the three of them were a team. She thought that although she was the female counterpart to their male duo, they had accepted her fully, and embraced the unity she knew was needed to survive what they were going through. She thought they had started to become friends. Apparently, she had thought wrong.
The tears fell, warm on her cheeks and then softly onto the faded blue pillowcase.
